Components of a College Learning Evaluation
We begin with an in-depth consultation to understand the student’s academic history, current challenges, and goals. This helps us create a tailored evaluation plan that addresses the student’s unique needs.
We review relevant educational records, previous evaluations (if applicable), and input from the student, parents, or educators to gain a clear picture of the student’s academic background and learning experiences.
Cognitive testing measures the student’s intellectual abilities, including:
- Problem-solving
- Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Working Memory
- Processing speed
Commonly used assessments include the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-5) and other tests designed to evaluate cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
Achievement tests measure the student’s academic performance in areas such as:
- Reading comprehension and fluency
- Writing skills
- Math skills
- Study habits and academic strategies
Tests like the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-4) are commonly used.
For students struggling with organization, focus, or time management, we conduct executive functioning and attention assessments. These tests help identify difficulties with:
- Planning and prioritization
- Time management and task initiation
- Impulse control and sustained attention
Emotional well-being plays a significant role in academic success. We evaluate for anxiety, depression, or other emotional factors that may be affecting academic performance. These assessments help determine whether additional mental health supports are necessary.
A feedback session is scheduled to review the results with the student and parents (if appropriate), ensuring a clear understanding of the findings and next steps.
Once the evaluation is complete, we provide a detailed report that outlines the student’s cognitive, academic, and emotional profile. This includes:
- A clear diagnosis, if applicable
- Recommendations for academic accommodations
- Strategies for improving study habits, time management, and organization
- Suggestions for campus resources, mental health support, or tutoring services
